FREE Crochet Pattern: Anchor Applique Tutorial

Want to add something nautical to your project?
I was making a Navy scarf for my Dad, and could not find a (free) pattern anywhere online that I liked - so I made one up!

This anchor with a rope wrapped around is made in 4 pieces that are stitched together, as I found that this method made the lines much sharper and defined than others I had seen. I plan to use this on some funky Rockabilly pieces and cute baby hats in the future. And of course anything involving Navy pride for family.

Tutorial/Pattern:

Materials:
  • 5 mm hook
  • I used Lion Wool Ease WW Oxford Grey for the anchor (Color A), and Red Heart WW Latte for the rope (Color B)
  • Needle to stitch pieces together
Stitches/Abbreviations:
  • ch = chain
  • ss = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tc = triple crochet
 Step 1 - Anchor Top:
  • Steps 1-3 are done with Color A
  •  Ch 4, ss to 1st ch to join ring
  • Ch 2, 10 dc into ring
  • Keeping your yarn attached to the ring so as to work in a continuous piece - ch 10
  • Turn, then hdc into 1st st of ring, and next 8 (9 hdc total)
  • Sc into the 1st st next to the ring
  • SS into the ring, then fasten off. Keep tail long for sewing later.

Step 2 - Small Upper Bar
  •  This is the easiest part! Just ch 7, and hdc in each st (7 hdc total)
  • You may attach as you go, or wait until all pieces are complete. I placed the pieces together without stitching as I went, so I could adjust and for reference.

Step 3 - Bottom of Anchor
  • Ch 15
  • Tc into 1st and 2nd stitches
  • Dc into 3rd st
  • Then 10 hdc, 1 dc, 2 tc (15 stitches total)
  • Ch 1, turn, hdc across (15 st total)
  • Ch 1 if you like to make the top end a bit pointy

At this point, sew the three pieces together.

Step 4 - Rope
  •  Switch to Color B, I doubled up the strands for this.
  • Ch 25
  • Flip anchor over, and attach the rope through the back loops, so it will not be visible from the front
  • Flip the anchor back over, and loosely loop the rope in the shape you want. I did not attch the rope until I attached the entire applique onto the scarf, so I could see where it looked best.

All that is left is to attach it to your project! I stitched some the the ends to make them pointier (especially the bottom part of the anchor) and made sure the center opening of the top ring was visible, like with a real anchor.

Hope you enjoy this! Can be used on hats, scarves, and much more!
